For those considering changing their cruising boat, a new book by a very well known cruising yacht designer has just arrived. Named "Choosing for Cruising" and written by Bruce Roberts-Goodson, of the Roberts range of solid cruising yachts, it looks at the real basics of what one needs to select and equip a cruising yacht. It addresses the hull material, the rig, interior layout and the engines and electric's. It goes on to consider the tender, ground tackle and even the crew. It does not limit the discussion to sea cruising and has a chapter specifically looking at inland waters cruising. A very good review of the options open. Royal Yachting Magazine

Dear Bruce, I've read and thoroughly enjoyed your book Choosing for Cruising. It goes into detail in some areas where I've never seen other authors even venture. You've opened up areas I haven't previously considered and I look forward to learning more from your book Metal Boats. Thank You, Stephen Lavender

There must be many cruising yachtsmen can recall the un-informed way they acquired their first cruising boat and then learned from experience what they ought to have bought if they had been better informed. Naturally, different people want different boats for different purposes and the number of books on the "ideal" cruising yacht is legion.
Choosing for Cruising is somewhat different in that it does not set out to press any personal preferences. Bruce Roberts-Goodson is an internationally known boat designer who has been In the business since the 1960s and with his own design company in Brisbane and offices in the US and the UK. His design company has sold thousands of plans all over the world.
The present book distills not only his long experience but also that relayed to him in hundreds of letters from cruising yachtsmen all over the world.
The book covers all aspects of cruising boats from hull and rig to interior accommodation, engines, ground tackle and all necessary equipment. Basically, the rule is to buy the very best (not necessarily brand new remember the boat jumbles), and here the author's professional expertise and his lists of equipment manufacturers and suppliers m many countries are invaluable.
For example, you can buy diesel-powered galley and heating stoves from a Canadian firm; wind generators from a firm in Bedfordshire, and so on. Appendix 2 listing the author's recommended reading is also more useful than many such lists.
There is sound advice, too on such ancillary topics as making sure personal relations are well tested before committing yourself to crewmembers. Nothing, in short, has been overlooked in this comprehensive manual which would be a sound investment for anyone considering
